Main route of the Interstate Highway System Missouri Highways
|
Interstate 64 (I-64) passes through in the St. Louis area in the U.S. state of Missouri. The entire route overlaps U.S. Route 40 (US 40). Because the road was a main thoroughfare in the St. Louis area before the development of the Interstate Highway System, it is not uncommon for locals to refer to the stretch of highway as "Highway 40" rather than "I-64". On December 6, 2009, the portion of the highway running through the city of St. Louis was named the Jack Buck Memorial Highway in honor of the late sportscaster.[2]

Immediately following the split of Interstate 55 and Interstate 70 in Downtown Saint Louis, Interstate 64 travels through the downtown area in a double decker configuration (Eastbound lanes lower level, and Westbound lanes upper level). In this area the expressway comes within fifty feet of the New Busch Stadium. Leaving Downtown, the freeway travels near Saint Louis University and through the Central West End of the city. In the Western Portion of Saint Louis, this highway skirts the Southern Edge of Forest Park. In this area, one would find both the St. Louis Science Center and St. Louis Zoo both immediately off the freeway.
West of Forest Park, I-64 exits the main city and enters Saint Louis County in the City of Richmond Heights. Through here, the expressway passes through older neighborhoods, and before the reconstruction, its outdated design had narrow shoulders and substandard exit and entrance ramps. The construction was completed December 7, 2009.
On the Western end of Richmond Heights, I-64 intersects Interstate 170 near the Saint Louis Galleria. The surrounding area is very congested with its many businesses and shopping centers. Continuing West, I-64 travels through affluent areas such as Ladue and Town and Country. Throughout 2008, Interstate 64 between I-170 and I-270 was closed for a complete rebuilding of the 70 year old highway. One lane in each direction was added between Spoede Road and Interstate 170 with reconstructed interchanges throughout the section. The reconstructed expressway opened to traffic on the morning of December 15, 2008.
In Town and Country, I-64 intersects with Interstate 270 in a flyover interchange built in the early 1990s. West of I-270, the freeway continues into West Saint Louis County through the city of Chesterfield. After traveling through the Chesterfield Valley, the freeway crosses the Daniel Boone Bridge and enters Saint Charles County. From here, I-64 continues past an interchange with Route 94 as well as a series of interchanges converted from at grade intersections. The final intersection at Callahan Road was removed on October 14, 2009,[3] completing the US 40 conversion to I-64, ending at Interstate 70 in Wentzville.
The Missouri Department of Transportation rebuilt the stretch of I-64 from Spoede Road to Kingshighway Boulevard between 2008 and 2009. The project included new concrete pavement on the highway; approximately 25 rebuilt bridges; and several reconfigured interchanges, including a new freeway-to-freeway interchange at Interstate 170.
The section between Spoede Road and I-170 was closed for reconstruction on Jan 2, 2008 and opened to traffic on December 15, 2008. The section between I-170 and Kingshighway Boulevard was closed on December 15, 2008 and reopened to traffic December 7, 2009.[4]
